Counselling and CBT

Counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy- a flexible approach

Are you experiencing anxiety, stress, low mood, depression, phobias, relationship problems, low self-esteem, overwhelm, perfectionism, bereavement, post-traumatic stress, or difficulties setting boundaries?

These are just some of the issues that can be improved with counselling and evidence–based CBT approaches.

Because one size most definitely doesn’t fit all, and because you are the expert on you and your life, we’ll work together as a partnership to draw on a wide range of tools and approaches so that you can achieve your goals, whatever they are. Read further to better understand the therapeutic experience.

Why would I come to you?

People come to therapy for a range of reasons, and whatever your reason is, it's valid. You might choose me because of my broad range of experience in education, because of my obvious love of nature or because you think I look safe. Research suggests the most important predictor of success in therapy is the  therapeutic relationship so if you are drawn to me, that's probably a good start...

What is CBT?

CBT considers the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how they all impact each other. We might unpick why you think the way you do, so you can make changes if you want. The aim of CBT is for you to become your own therapist so we'll develop a range of strategies that you can take away and use in your life.

What can I expect from you?

I'll meet you just as you are. I'll ask you what  you need from me particularly in terms of communication and sensory preferences, and I'll act on them. I'll believe in you even if you don't and I'll listen to whatever you want to tell me, no judgement. I'll ask you questions and I may challenge you, but always in a way that keeps you safe.

I’m not sure what I need or want, can you help me?

Definitely! Most people don't know when they first come, maybe just a sense that things could be better. We'll work together to get an idea of what's going on for you, and from there we'll create a plan. And the plan can definitely be changed!

What will happen in sessions?

Sessions usually last for 50 minutes and some people find it helpful to have an agenda and use CBT 'tools', some people prefer just to talk, and most do a mixture. We'll respond to whatever you need in that particular session, even if it means a change of focus.

How many sessions will I need?

There's no definite answer to this but most people come for between 6 and 20 sessions. It's often good to commit to 6 sessions initially and then review progress and changes. We'll review progress regularly to make sure you're getting the most from your investment in yourself.

Where will sessions take place?

We can be flexible. Most people prefer online via video or phone, and some people do a mixture of those, depending on how they're feeling.

I see clients face to face in Leith on a Wednesday.

Some people like to walk and talk as it feels less pressured and I'm happy to talk to you about that.

How much does it cost?

Sessions cost £50-£60 for 50 minutes.

I have a limited number of concessionary rates available.

Coaching

Coaching - a flexible approach

Do you have ADHD and feel you'd benefit from some support in

  • organising yourself
  • reducing procrastination
  • feeling better about yourself?

Are you a teacher who wants to be able to manage your workload or even - imagine- have a work-life balance?

Do you have goals but you're not sure how to achieve them? Would some accountability keep you on track?

I've successfully coached many people over the past 5 years and supported them to find solutions to everyday issues and work towards living the life they want.

Therapy and counselling often look to the past to understand what is happening  now. We talk about feelings, thoughts and behaviours.  Coaching starts in the present and we focus on goals and changing our behaviours.

Of course, in reality there is a lot of overlap as feelings, thought and behaviours all affect each other and our aim is to feel better about ourselves and live a life more in line with what we want. My experience as a coach  and as a therapist means we can be flexible and respond to whatever you need.
